What to wear?

You should be able to move freely so comfortable clothing is best such as shorts, leggings or tracksuit bottoms with a gym top or T-shirt. Tighter fitted sport clothing is preferable (but not essential) so that your body movements are visible to your instructor who can then give you accurate feedback on your technique. Coin belts & hip scarves will really help you gain the most from your lesson. They will allow you to follow the music with your own rhythm adding the jingle from your belt. These are available to try or buy from your instructor. We usually dance bare-feet but you can wear ballet shoes instead if you like. Revealing your belly is optional.

There are a whole host of other accessories that you can use too. These can be a great way to enhance your movements, creativity & make a more spectacular show. Speak to your instructor for information about our accessory options.

Courses

Click to enlargeIf you frequent our regular classes or sign up for a course you can expect the fun to continue whilst also improving your skills......

You will learn the basics first & before long you will have mastered shimmying, variation hip circles, undulations, hip drops & figure of 8 moves. Once the basics have been grasped you can expect to introduce arm movements & other combinations using other parts of your body to create intricate dance moves. Your co-ordination will be enhanced as each muscle group is worked either in isolation or as an ordered pattern. As you progress you will learn to co-ordinate different parts of your body simultaneously & eventually introduce entertaining facial expressions too.

You will be encouraged to invent your own styles that allow you to bring out your inner interpretations of the music. This is something you can also work on in your spare time as your shimmies are not just confined to the studio!

total belly dance will not only teach you about movements. Each new student can expect to receive information about the art & culture they are learning. We feel it is important to recognise & be educated about the history & background of belly dance in order to benefit most from your lessons.

Having never done belly dancing before I signed up for a course with total belly dance. I tried it and enjoyed it so much I started to come every week. It exceeded my expectations.
I learnt so much & really had fun at the same time. It gave me the confidence to do a small performance as a treat for my husband on his birthday after just a few months of learning!

Speciality Workshops

Click to enlargeOnce you have mastered the basic movements, you will be invited to join a speciality workshop. These take place periodically & cover magical belly dance artforms using accessories such as veils, canes, swords & Isis wings. Whilst exploring these various areas of belly dance you will take the traditonal moves that you learnt in your regular lessons to another level. You will learn graceful tricks & be able to create beautiful images & magical effects with the help of your new accessories. The workshops are generally of longer duration than our regular classes & are often attended by a mixture of students from our different locations.

Wow. Truely amazing!
Adrianna, London
It was great putting what we learnt during our normal lessons to such good use. I had no idea they used canes whilst belly dancing. When's the next workshop? I want to try the veils!
